How did you become interested in food?
I was about to pursue political science in México, however, it was not a craft I could create with my hands and express with interpretation. Food and wine become the ying and yang of our industry colliding to become a perfect taste or balance in our life. After looking at many institutions, none offered me a Bachelor’s degree and an Advanced Wine, Beverage, and Hospitality concentration. Only The Culinary Institute of America, combined food handling, administration, and hospitality which was the best academic option for me.
Who most influenced you?
My father, being a doctor, a specialist, and an intellectual, taught me to pursue the choice that made me thrive for more and be happy at the same time. He would say “follow your passion, but always make sure to work on your craft.” Those were the words he told me when I made the decision to pursue a career in this wonderful industry.
Why did you choose the CIA?
If you want to be the best, you have to train with the best. No other institution offers the programs or instructors that the CIA has. After comparing many other culinary schools, most of them fell short with regard to the programs they offered, except the CIA.
What do you like best about CIA?
I like the real-life experience that the CIA offers in every class. From the production kitchen meals for students, to working front-of-the-house, you are given the opportunity to experience all the different hospitality aspects of this industry. I really enjoy focusing and gaining a deeper understanding of wines and beverages while learning how to apply it in a managerial or even entrepreneurial aspect.
What are your career goals/plans?
My career goal is to become a chef owner and start my own establishment or restaurant in my home town. Thanks to the CIA, I’ve had the opportunity to work and stage in more than one country including Spain, Italy, and the US. All the knowledge and skills that I have acquired are a direct result of enrolling at the CIA and have made my career goal a much more ambitious one.
Any advice for prospective students?
If you are passionate about this industry, then don’t hesitate. The Culinary Institute of America offers the best education available. It is the Harvard University of our industry, so don’t be afraid to challenge yourself by choosing the best.
